I never intended to take the traditional path.
For me, being an artist has never meant making something, hanging it on a wall and then disappearing behind it. I’m part of the work. Where it came from matters. The story matters. And the experience someone has with it matters.
BEYOND THE ART
The art is only part of the story.
My work begins with the things I notice and the things I can’t quite let go of. These things are memories, history, culture, people, moments and questions that stay in my head long after I first encounter them. Eventually, some of those things become drawings.
But I’ve never thought the drawing was the whole story.
The finished piece may be what ends up on the wall, but there is always something behind it: why I made it, what I was thinking about, what I discovered along the way and, sometimes, what I still haven’t figured out.
That’s also why I’ve chosen to build my career differently. I’m not interested in sitting quietly and waiting for the traditional art world to decide when or if I should be seen. I want a direct relationship with the people who connect with my work.
That happens through the art itself, but also through the stories behind it, conversations, the studio and simply allowing people to know the person who made it.
I don’t just want someone to look at something I created and move on.
I want it to stay with them.
Because ultimately, that’s what I’m trying to build: not simply a collection of drawings, but a body of work, stories and experiences that people remember.
